Healthy result for major children’s hospital

Birmingham Children’s Hospital needed to improve access to its roof to enable the routine maintenance of heating and ventilation equipment to be carried out safely in line with current regulations.

Working with Unique Safety Systems who were contracted to manage the project, the team at Ascenda Engineering was supplied with a survey report from which they designed the equipment required, producing detailed drawings for approval.

There were a number of challenges – very limited access to the roof area and also stringent weight restrictions – so the stairs and step units specified needed to be supplied in kit form.

This eliminated the need for a crane as the components could be carried up to the roof through hatches and then assembled in situ. Fabricating everything from lightweight aluminium ensure that weight was kept to a minimum.
